IN THE NEWS: Roughing it with Central's 3rd graders

Central School Principal Cindy Marten leads a big-time outdoor adventure for her third graders, most of them city kids who've never been camping. The adventure to the two-day campout in East County came complements of sponsors who included the Meeker Foundation. Marten uses such hands-on education to teach about Kumeyaay Indians, native plants, animals and reptiles, astronomy and hiking. "You do not get this from a textbook.
