Board approves 2016-17 academic calendars for all schools

calendar On June 9, the Board of Education approved the 2016-17 academic calendars for both traditional and year-round schools. The first day of school will be Monday, August 29, 2016. Traditional schools will end on June 14, 2017; year-round schools will end on July 21, 2017. See full year calendars below:

2013-14 school calendars add another day for instruction

Supt. Marten and the Board of Education are pleased to announce that the district has partnered with the San Diego Education Association (SDEA) to restore an instructional day to the 2013-14 school year, bringing the total number of instructional days to 179. This restoration assures that our students receive maximum educational impact and have increased opportunity for success.

Calendar Additionally, another instructional day has been added to the 2014-15 school calendars, bringing the total number of instructional days to 180. This number represents that instructional days will be fully restored to the pre-budget crisis level, a priority of the superintendent, board members, staff and parents.

Below is the restoration plan for the 2013-14 school year.

Traditional Schools: June 13, 2014, is now an instructional day and the last day of school for students.

Year Round Schools: June 23, 2014, will become an instructional day. It was previously a non-school day.The last day of school for Year Round sites remains Monday, July 21, 2014.

Please Note: Schools have the option to change their graduation/promotion to Friday, June13. If sites have already planned their promotion/graduation on Thursday, June 12, they may keep that date as planned. Students should return for a final instructional day on Friday, June 13. Parents should check with their principal on the status for their child’s school.

It's official: 2014-15 school year starts Sept. 2

The 2014-15 school year for all schools in the San Diego Unified School District begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, following the recommendation of Superintendent Cindy Marten and approval by the Board of Education at its meeting Tuesday evening.

Other highlights of the 180-day schedule:
  • Winter break begins for both traditional and year-round schools on December 22, 2014;
  • Spring break begins for both traditional and year-round schools on March 30, 2015;
  • The last instructional day on the traditional calendar is Monday, June 15, 2015;
  • The last instructional day on the year-round calendar is Tuesday, July 21, 2015.
Representatives of parent groups as well as employee bargaining units participate in the district Calendar Committee, along with district staff from Labor Relations, Payroll, Testing, Pupil Accounting, Transportation, Special Education, Summer Schools, Human Resource Services, and Communications.

Supt. Marten has asked that a plan be created that would transition all district schools to a common calendar in the 2015-16 school year or beyond. With this direction, a schedule of meetings with stakeholders will be established in the next several months. Meeting notices will be posted on the district's web page, calendar, school website district news sections and social media.

Madison High 50th Anniversary highlights upcoming events at San Diego's schools

In addition to year-round schools resuming classes, Madison High School's 50th anniversary this Saturday, April 27, highlights a busy week at San Diego Unified campuses. There are public tours of schools scheduled for prospective parents, the National College Fair and the start of Asian and Pacific Highlander Heritage Month.
Come celebrate Madison's 50th Anniversary Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27. The event will feature a 1950's car show, live entertainment, food and school tours of Madison's new facilities. Alumni can look at yearbooks from the last 50 years and will have an opportunity to catch up with classmates and Madison staff. Madison High School is located at 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117).

Also on Saturday, community members and families will work on a beautification project at Cabrillo Elementary School, 3120 Talbot St. (92106). The San Diego Rotary Club will be painting the school logo and doing other spruce-up projects with staff and students. The work starts at 8 a.m.

Monday, April 29 is Back to School day for students at year-round schools. Students at these elementary and middle schools have been on vacation since Monday, April 1.

2013-14 School Year Calendar Now Online

Parents, time to log into that online datebook, as San Diego Unified has approved its calendar for the 2013-14 school year and the first day of next year is Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Winter Break Begins Monday for Year-Round Schools, Dec. 24 for Traditional Schools

Year-round schools in the San Diego Unified School District begin their four-week winter break this Monday, Dec. 17, while traditional-schedule schools and district offices are closed for their two-week break beginning Monday, Dec. 24.

Year-round schools have longer winter and spring breaks, as the school year extends to July 19. Traditional schedule schools end their year on June 11. Both schedules have the same number of days of instruction.

Schools on the year-round schedule are: Audubon, Baker, Balboa, Bethune, Birney, Boone, Burbank, Carson, Carver, Central, Chavez, Cherokee Point, Clark, Dewey, Edison, Emerson/Bandini, Ericson, Euclid, Farb, Fay, Garfield Elementary, Golden Hill, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardy, Horton, Ibarra, Jerabek, Johnson, Jones, Joyner, Kimbrough, Knox, Language Academy, Linda Vista, Logan, Marshall Elementary, Mason, Miller, Montgomery, Normal Heights, Paradise Hills, Penn, Perkins, Perry, Porter, Rosa Parks, Sequoia, Tierrasanta, Valencia Park, Walker, Webster, Wilson, Zamorano.

2012-13 Official Calendar Approved; Includes School Closures Due to Budget Cuts


The calendar for the 2012-13 school year has been approved by the Board of Education. Finalizing of some of the dates were delayed due to negotiations with district labor unions over furlough days and other adjustments due to state budget reductions. Here are the important dates in the 2012-13 school year.

Board Approves 2012-13 Student Instructional Calendars

The Board of Education has approved the 2012-13 student instructional calendars for traditional and year-round schools. The information is posted on the district website at www.sandi.net/calendars. The calendars are based on 180 instructional days and are subject to change.
