2009 Teachers of the Year Honored

Bill Freeman, Michael Crawford and Philippe Poncey have been honored as San Diego Unified School District's 2009 Teachers of the Year.

A Teacher of the Year is selected for each school level. Freeman teaches fourth grade at Porter Elementary School in Lincoln Heights, Crawford is a science teacher at Clark Middle School in City Heights, and Poncey teaches French and drama at the School of International Business at San Diego High School.

"Each one has affected their students' lives in a different way, and has helped them along their road to becoming a productive adult," said Dr. Terry Grier, district superintendent. "These three are outstanding examples of the talented and dedicated professionals we have in the San
Diego Unified School District."

San Diego Unified's Teachers of the Year and runners-up are eligible to apply for San Diego county Teacher of the Year, part of the process leading to the national Teacher of the Year.

The trio were saluted at the Day of the Teacher Celebration Tuesday, May 5, at Sherman Elementary School. 140 school-site Teachers of the Year, the latest class of National Board Certified Teachers, and the Future Educator Scholars entering the teaching profession were also honored.

The event was catered by students from Garfield, Morse, Madison and the San Diego High School of Business, with music from the Mission Bay High School Dixie Jazz
Band.

Major sponsorship of the event comes from Time Warner Cable, Blackboard Connect, Proflowers, Mission Federal Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union, and the San Diego Education Association.
