H1N1 Virus Update to San Diego Unified Community, 3 p.m., May 4, 2009

This is an update to the San Diego Unified School District community on issues related to the H1N1 (swine) flu as of 3 p.m., May 4, 2009.
  • School Status: All San Diego Unified campuses -- other than the Kearny High Educational Complex and the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) -- will be open tomorrow, Tuesday, May 5.

  • Kearny and SCPA Closed: Kearny High Educational Complex and SCPA are now closed based on direction from the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency; they are currently scheduled to reopen on Monday, May 18. One student at each school is suspected of having the H1N1 virus. The health department is monitoring the situation and will notify the district when the schools can safely be reopened. Students should stay home and not congregate in large groups for 7-10 days, according to the health department. At this time, all other San Diego Unified schools are open.

  • Students who Reside with SCPA and Kearny Students: Other children living in the same household as Kearny and SCPA students should stay home until further notice. Be sure to call that student's school and inform them that there is a Kearny or SCPA student in your home.

  • Learn Online: Students at Kearny and SCPA -- and any school, at any time -- can use San Diego Unified's Online Learning Resources at http://www.sandi.net/learning/. The page has math, science, language arts and social studies lessons and games to help students improve their grades. There are also links and other information for parents/guardians to help their student achieve.

  • Staff Returns: Teachers and staff can return to SCPA and Kearny on Wednesday, May 6.

  • 100-Degree Fever: Any student or staff member who is ill with a 100-degree or higher fever, along with cough, sore throat or other suspect acute respiratory symptoms should stay home and report this to the school office.

  • Homework for Students: District staff is working on issues regarding testing, homework and ways to continue learning during this disruptive period for students who are home from school.

  • Information Hotline Opens Tuesday, May 5: An information telephone hotline for parents is scheduled to be activated on Tuesday, May 5; the telephone number and more details will be announced then.
