S.D. Unified successes put district in running for top prize

IN THE NEWS: A team of education researchers descended on Josephine Washington’s freshman biology class at Kearny High School on Wednesday, hovering over her shoulder with questions about their work with the nonprofit Surfaid International. Josephine and her classmates talked about malaria outbreaks that can hit developing countries following natural disasters. They also discussed the biology and social impact of composting. These hands-on, real-world lessons resonated with education experts sent to gather information on the San Diego Unified School District, one of four finalists for the prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education.
