Innovation Middle Teacher Wins a Special Apple

Julie Garcia, winner of Apple AwardJulie Garcia loves to teach math and make her lessons so engaging and relevant that she’s going to be reaching potentially millions of students.

How? Through the combined power of her gift for teaching and being named an Apple Distinguished Educator. Julie teaches at Innovation Middle School, where she uses technology extensively including kid-friendly programs like iMovie and Garage Band, both staples of Macintosh computers. She has her students create lessons and the rest of her class complete the lessons on the iPod touch, a popular palm-sized combination music-playing and communications device.

Her approach is working. Her classes have higher test scores and rank high on other measures of student engagement. Currently Julie is the star of the Apple Distinguished Educator program, her face on the main Apple computer website. As part of the program she will share her teaching approaches and successes with other educators and students worldwide. Click here to see more.
